History/Background Information: Silver 8 Reales Cob struck in Mexico (a then Spanish Colony) during the reign of King Philip IV of Spain. The Spice Islands Wreck (C.1630) contains the remains of an unknown vessel which was discovered laden with chests containing silver 8 reales or "Pieces of 8" after having spent almost 400 years on the ocean floor. The 8 Reale was an important medium of exchange in the new world and formed the basis of many a nation's coinage.
